At Sensitization Campaign in Rivers, CBN Urges Nigerians to Embrace eNaira

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has enjoined Nigerians to embrace eNaira in order to drive the cashless policy of the federal government.

The CBN, working in collaboration with the Zenith Bank, made the appeal during a two-sensitization programme on eNaira at the University of Port Harcourt and the Rivers State-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE).

Speaking at the event, Port Harcourt Branch Controller of CBN, Mr. Maxwell Okorafor said the sensitisation exercise was aimed at providing adequate information to students and members of the public about the eNaira as an alternative means of financial transaction, in the country.

He disclosed that the eNaira is targeted at making financial transactions a stress-free one for Nigerians, adding that it will also improve the nation’s economy.

He explained that the eNaira is cheap and comes with a lot of benefits to Nigerians as it will solve a lot of financial crime and reduce money laundering and other financial fraud as well as giving visibility for monetary policies in the country.

Okorafor also stressed that the eNaira will be beneficial to the institutions especially in payment of fees and also reduce the cost of policy management.

“We are here to introduce the CBN Cryptocurrency, known as eNaira. eNaira is nothing other than the naira in your palm and in your wallet. Whatever you can do with the money in your pocket and your wallet, you can also do with eNaira.

“The whole world is going digital. So the Central Bank of Nigeria is also responding to the innovation by introducing a lot of cashless policies and one of it is the eNaira.

“Incidentally, we are the first Central Bank in Africa to introduce eNaira and only second to the whole world”.

CBN’s Head of Information and Clients Services, Mr. Collins Onuosa noted that the CBN targeted students as they are more in tune with technology.

He said the apex bank has been engaging a number of organisations, groups, institutions and students and part of the objective of the e-Naira is to bring everyone on board using different types of platforms.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Prof Owunari Georgewill, represented by the Provost, UNIPORT College of Health Science, Prof. Angela Ine Frank-Briggs said the institution is ready to partner with the apex bank and give them all necessary support.

Also, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof. Okey Onuchuku represented by the Acting Dean, Student Affairs IAUE, Dr. Philemon Iyagba said the Institution is happy to embrace the eNaira and is open to working with the apex bank in ensuring a successful cashless financial policy.
