The Director General of the Agency, Muhammad Sani Sidi stated this while presenting food items and building materials to victims of market fire in Nguru, Yobe state at the weekend.

He said NEMA will continue to live up to its responsibilities by partnering with state governments to come to the aid of traders affected by fire incidents. This is necessary in order to show the Federal Government's concern for its citizens.

Sani Sidi said market fire was among the major disasters in the country which causes incalculable losses, stressing that all hands must be on deck to put in place a robust disaster risk reduction programme that will be geared towards disaster prevention and mitigation in our environment.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Muhammad Sani Sidi, disclosed this when an African Union Humanitarian Mission led by Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdullahi, Commissioner Political Affairs, visited the Headquarters of the Agency at the weekend. He said there were about eighty thousand (80,000) displaced Nigerians currently taking refuge in Cameroun and that the federal government has been making efforts to cater for all their basic needs.

He said the Federal Government and governments of states affected by the insurgency, United Nations Organisations, International Non-Governmental Organisations and the private sector had done a lot in the past four years to manage large numbers of internally displaced persons in the North East, adding that “we have moved from the emergency response stage to recovery and resettlement of the IDPs.”

He stated this when he led a team of Health Policy specialists and Clinicians for an on the spot Health needs assessment and strategy appraisal at IDPs camps in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He said the assessment was to determined medical challenges and health related issues affecting IDPs camps in Maiduguri and host communities as well as liberated communities with emphasis on children, maternal care and vulnerable persons.
