abubakar-sani-bello-niger-governorNiger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello urges the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Idris Koptun Ibrahim to remain focused and justify the confidence the country’s leadership has repose in him.
The admonition came at the wake of his confirmation as the substantive IGP by the Council of State and the Police Council under the chairmanship of President Muhammad Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja.
Gov. Sani Bello in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndache said that the IGP should remain focused for the Police to reassert itself as a vital institution in government’s efforts at restoring peace in the trouble spots across the country.
The governor said “being the lead agency in internal security, Police under your watch should strive to build on the gains recorded by the military in the fight against terrorism by finally restoring peace, security and civil life in the affected areas.
“You will recall my congratulatory message to you in June when your appointment in acting capacity was made, I exhort you to effectively and consciously ensure that Police takes its Constitutional duty of maintaining internal peace and security of a nation tenaciously.
“I enjoined you to as a matter of priority re-position the Police to effectively provide efficient policing and a more proactive service to the people. The much talked about Community Policing should be given attention so that the force can effectively provide the much needed security”.
The governor also urged the Police boss to justify his choice by the country’s leadership maintaining that Ibrahim cannot afford not to live up to expectation of taking the nation’s Police to the next level.
According to the governor, “No doubt Nigerian Police is highly respected and globally recognised. You owe it a responsibility to ensure that this enviable status is not only be jealously guarded but consciously improved upon.
“This you do by raising the bar of recruitment to the force, ensure a technologically driven and people friendly Police,” Gov. Sani Bello advised.
