List of Winners of Campus Journalism Award 2018
The Youths Digest Magazine has presented Certificates of Excellence to winners of the Campus Journalism Awards (CJA) 2018 at a ceremony in Abuja.
The award ceremony was chaired by the Spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr. Femi Adesina while the Publisher of Premium Times Newspaper, Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi as the Guest Speaker.
The Editor of Youths Digest magazine, Gidado Yushau Shuaib said that the award was instituted to encourage young journalists to spread message of love, peace and harmony through their communication skills.
Gidado said: “The award is aimed at acknowledging, recognising, celebrating and motivating student journalists, young writers, press clubs and campus media outlets.
“The inaugural CJA honours outstanding campus journalists, student writers and media publications from tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The award categories include Upcoming Writer, Entertainment Writer, Sports Writer, News Reporter, Gender Equality, Broadcaster, Photo-Journalist and Videographer.
“Others are: Essayist, Pen Club, Author, Social Media Influencer, Investigative Journalist, Features Writer, Syndicated Writer, Editor and Magazine of the Year. Meanwhile we also have special recognition awards to distinguished personalities who have contributed immensely to the promotion and development of Campus Journalism in Nigeria.”
The Editor disclosed that before the selection process, entries for nominations were opened to students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The nominations for the awards must have been published either in print or online between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017. The Entry and Participation were free for all students.
According to him “The Award Committee received over 100 entries that were thoroughly assessed for accuracy, clarity, originality, creativity and the unique styles of delivery. The Committee also considered excellence in artistic presentations that enhance or augment the nominations. After the first screening process, 30 nominations were picked as finalists before the eventual winners were selected. The Committee endeavors in reassigning some nominations to most appropriate categories, especially where there are more nominees on particular categories.
“The award ceremony was preceded with a Campus Journalism Workshop deliberately organised to train, educate and interact with the finalists and award winners. Similarly, a special panel selected the Campus Journalist of the Year from the list of winners after a writing contest.
“While the Award Committee is wholly responsible for the selections of the winners, in this contest we are all winners and no losers. We hope that subsequent Campus Journalism Awards will provide additional incentives like scholarship, internship opportunities and automatic jobs for award recipients,” he concluded.
