Naval Trainees Decry Prison Congestion

Naval trainees of the Nigerian Navy Provost and Regulating School, Makurdi, Benue state have decried the high rate of prison congestion in Nigeria.

They made this known when they visited the Medium Security Prison in Makurdi, Benue state, for a study tour.

The trainees who were led by Lieutenant Commander JG Akwu called on relevant authorities to expedite action to decongest prisons nationwide.

While welcoming them, the Officer in-charge of the prison who was represented by DSP KA Ugwuoke thanked them for visiting, and encouraged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria. He also enlightened them on the many reforms going on in various prisons nationwide, and urged them to desist from stigmatizing ex-offenders.

The Medium Security Prison, Makurdi, Benue state, has a capacity of 240 but presently locks 938 inmates.
