FG Builds 5.4km drainage System in Anambra Communities to Tackle Flooding
The Federal Government of Nigeria has on Wednesday, 18th July, 2018 commissioned and handed over to Anambra State Government, a 5.4km drainage system and road improvement works meant to check persistent Erosion and Flood challenges at Nda Nnobi and Alor communities in ldemili South LGA of Anambra State.

The ceremony which was presided over by the special guest of Honour, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Lt (rtd) General Abdirahman Bello Danbazau, was well attended by the heads of Anambra state Government Security Agencies.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammad Buhari, the Hon. Minister said that the project would reduce the challenges of Erosion and Flood which had affected the two communities. He reiterated the present administration’s resolve to carry everyone along irrespective of geographical location or political affiliation. His words:

“No part of the country would suffer neglect owing to its geographical location or political consideration…the Federal Government’s execution of projects across the country also demonstrates the sincerity of purpose of the Buhari led administration towards entrenching justice, equity and fair play to all and sundry”.

He also made the assurance that the present administration would continue to implement all genuine policies, contracts and agreements nationally and internationally entered by the past administrations.

Earlier in her welcome speech, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Dr. Habiba Lawal, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Soil Erosion and Flood Control, Engr. Udochi Nwachukwu while commending the contractor and the consultant for the timely completion of the project, enjoined the members of the benefitting communities to take over and exercise ownership over the project by ensuring its care and sustainability. She also cautioned the communities not to allow the resources Which the Federal Government had committed on the project be wasted.

Appreciiating the Federal Government on behalf of Anambra State Government was the representative of the Executive Governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulube. He expressed the State Government’s gratitude for the project the Federal Government extended to the state but like ‘Oliver Twist” he asked for more of such intervention projects emphasising that Anambra state has lots of life threatening gullies.

The representatives of the two communities who spoke on behalf of their individual communities were very happy for the project. According to them they thought it would be project as usual, where government starts a project without completing it and at long run would end up leaving the place worse than it was. They were so grateful for the quality work done. As they praised the Federal Government, Ecological Fund Office and the contractor, they also praised their son Dr. Ngige through whom the project came to them.

It would be recalled that the project was spread to two communities under ldemili South LGA namely New Nnobi and Alor communities respectively. One prominent site at Nda Nnobi where the event took place and seven other sites scattered within Alor community. Altogether the 5.4km Drainage/ road improvement works to check Erosion and flood menace.

Present at the occasion were the heads of all security agencies in Anambra State, traditional rulers from the benefitting communities and members of the Press.
