2023 Elections: Lux Terra’s Network and Advocacy Group Holds Town Hall Meeting

The Network and Advocacy Group of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation on Saturday, 14th May 2022 held a Town hall meeting at the foundation’s multipurpose hall in Abuja.
The meeting with the theme, 2023 Elections: Towards Selecting Credible and Competent Leaders, had in attendance people from all walks of life.

While delivering his welcome address, the Executive Director Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, Fr. George Ehusani decried the spate of insecurity which has reached an alarming level with the country’s security infrastructure witnessing increasing pressure on its capacity for corresponding response.

Fr. George said he is deeply saddened, distressed and depressed over the nation’s current situation and prayed it does not collapse, as those steering the affairs of the country seem lost, adding that he is worried about the future of our youth.
He then advocated for restructuring of the nation, calling on people to know the common enemy and fight towards securing a nation we believe in by participating in the electoral process.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Towards Electing Credible Leaders’, Mrs Ene Obi, Convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room on Elections and Country Director Action Aid Nigeria, said Nigerians must take charge of their destiny, be responsible citizens and do the right thing. She said voter apathy is not an option, we must all be upright citizens and make a choice to build the nation for our children.
Mrs Obi said changing what we do not want is a long road that requires total commitment. She enjoined all present to let their voices be heard by registering, obtaining the Permanent Voter Card, PVC, and vote to make the change.

On his part the second speaker Mr Clement Nwankwo, Executive Director of Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) speaking on the topic, Protecting the Integrity of the Electoral Process, said the most fundamental principle defining credible elections is that they must reflect the free expression of the will of the people and we can only achieve this when elections are transparent, inclusive, and accountable. He said we are in a country where bad deeds are rewarded positively and this notion can only be changed when people use the most powerful tool, which is the PVC.
He said it is everyone’s business to determine and decide who should lead the country.

Participants responded as well, saying the only way to successfully do this is to strive for, and imbue the Nigerian electoral process with requisite integrity that would guarantee the actualization of the aspirations of Nigerians for both stable democratic development and consolidation.
But the burning question still lingers, ‘what does the future holds?

This is the first Town Hall meeting organized this year by the Network and Advocacy Group of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation sponsored by MacAthur Foundation.
