Man Nabbed in Uyo for Trafficking Minor as Zamfara Emirate Supports NSCDC

The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a man for trafficking a minor in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The suspect, John Okokon Akadi, 45years old male, identified by the victim as ‘Mr Essien’, was arrested by operatives of the NSCDC on 1st November, 2022 in Uruan LGA, following information provided to the corps about his complicity in selling a minor to someone without the consent of his parents. The suspect was alledged to have sold Master Prince Michael Inyang to one Asuquo Ikpang to work for him as labourer for an undisclosed fee.

The boy, Prince Michael Inyang, 13 years old, was allegedly sold into servitude by the suspect to Mr Asuquo Ikpang family in Cameroon where he worked as a fisherman without pay for over two years at Ineh Fishing Settlement in Cameroon.

According to the victim, his master (Asuquo Ikpang) died in 2021, after which his wife transferred him to serve someone else for a monthly fee of 4,500 naira which was paid to the wife. He narrated the level of maltreatment he received in the hands of his new master which attracted sympathy from some members of the fishing community who were Nigerians.

The concerned Nigerians interrogated Prince Michael and were able to know he is a Nigerian, from Uruan LGA in Akwa Ibom State. They got his bio-data and traced his father through the primary school he attended in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA. The father, who had reported his missing son to the Nigeria Police headquarters in Uyo was contacted and he went to Cameroon to reclaim his son, whom he met in an appalling state.

Based on the information provided by the victim’s, father, Comdt Suleiman Mafara directed the Anti-human unit of the corps to track the suspect and apprehend him. Consequently, a team of NSCDC operatives led by SC Grace Wilson tracked and apprehended the suspect.

Preliminary investigations were concluded after which the suspect was handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). The representative of NAPTIP who received the suspect promised to prosecute the matter diligently, as they seek justice for the crime committed.
