NDLEA Arrests 601 Drug Peddlers, Convicts 56, Rehabilitates 39 in Plateau

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Plateau State Command has arrested 601 drug peddlers, and convicted about 56 of them, PRNigeria reports.

The criminals were nabbed over the last six months, says Umar Mustapha Yahuza, Commander of Narcotics of the Plateau NDLEA Command.

Yahuza disclosed this on Monday at a press briefing to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a yearly event celebrated on the 26th of June.

The text of his press briefing reads: “I welcome you all to this year’s commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking, a yearly event celebrated on the 26th June, though weeklong activities precede the grand finale which we are celebrating now.

“The Plateau State Command over the last 6 months achieved the following feats:

“A. Arrests and Seizures:
I. A total of six hundred and fifty (601 males and 49 males) suspects were arrested.
II. 589.817 kg of Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana) were seized
III. 15.176 kg of various types of Psychotropic substances (which includes Tramadol, Diazepam, Rohypnol, Pentazocine among others) were also seized
IV. Also 12.22grm and 2.1 grm of Cocaine and Heroin were respectively seized. So also 106.4 grm of Crystal Methamphetamine seized.

“B. COUNSELLING & REHABILITATION AND WAR AGAINST DRUG ABUSE (WADA):
I. War Against Drug Abuse (WADA). Within the period under review, numerous War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) activities were conducted all over the State. These includes lectures at both public and private establishments which comprises schools, religious centres, traditional institutions, media houses (print and electronic). Also the Command assisted in providing materials for academic research at both undergraduates and graduates levels.
II. Treatment and Rehabilitation: Forty one (41) drug dependent persons, all males were admitted for comprehensive drug dependence treatment and rehabilitation. Also, thirty nine (39) drug dependent clients were treated and rehabilitated and discharged and now fully re-integrated in to the society.
C. Brief Counselling Intervention: In the same vein, 466 drug users underwent brief counselling intervention. These were those mostly arrested during mop up operations in Jos metropolis just before the 2023 General Elections, with the aim of deterring drug dealers freedom of action before, during and after the elections. Prominent areas included Congo Russia, Kugiya, Gyel, Gada Biyu, Filin Shaitan among others.

“D. PROSECUTION ACTIVITIES:
In the last six months the Command secured the conviction of 56 suspects between the ages of 18yrs-45yrs at the Federal High Court, to various prison terms”.
