Israel envoy visits IGP, pledges support for Nigeria on improving policing system

The Israel government has assured support in all areas to improve the policing system in Nigeria.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, played host to the Israel Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, and his entourage in his Abuja office.

During the visit, Egbetokun briefed the Ambassador about the new Nigeria Police Special Intervention Squad which is the pet project of the IG to tackle crimes and criminality, including violent crimes across the country.

He urged the ambassador to initiate collaborative agenda in the areas of training and retraining, cross-fertilising ideas, intelligence gathering, and improved human capacity building.

Consequently, the Israeli ambassador agreed to support Nigeria in improving its policing system.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi made the development known on Tuesday night.

Adejobi said, “The ambassador, in his response, appreciated the IG and assured the Nigeria Police of the Israeli government’s support in all areas to improve the policing system in Nigeria.

“The meeting had in attendance the Deputy Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Inbar Garden, members of the Police Force Management team and other senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force.”

In the same vein, the IG charged commanders of the Special Protection Unit to be more professional and dedicated to duties with a view to standardizing escort and guard duties which are statutorily their responsibility.

Egbetokun made the call while addressing the commanders of the SPU at a meeting held at the IG’s conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

“He warned the personnel of the unit against reckless, inappropriate and illegal activities such as improper dressing, high-handedness, drunkenness, while on duty as the Force will henceforth take due disciplinary action on any unethical act capable of denting the image of the Force,” Adejobi said.
