Military Dismisses ‘Attack’ on Bishop Kukah, Sokoto Cathedral as False
The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports of an alleged attack on the residence of Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA said the viral report, which circulated widely on social media, did not reflect the security reality in Sokoto State.
“The attention of 8 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to a misleading social media post falsely reporting an armed attack on the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral. We categorically debunk these unfounded claims as there was no such attack,” the statement read.
The Army clarified that Bishop Kukah remains safe and is currently carrying out his Easter obligations without any disruption, while security around the cathedral and across the state remains intact.

It further reassured residents that troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, have maintained a strong operational presence to guarantee peace, particularly during the Easter period.
“The safety and security of Bishop Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral remain intact. Robust security measures are in place to ensure a peaceful and secure Easter celebration across our area of responsibility,” the statement added.
The military also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to disregard unverified information capable of causing panic or undermining public confidence.
Security authorities have consistently warned against the spread of fake news, noting that such misinformation could heighten tension and distract ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the region.
Residents were therefore advised to rely on official communication channels and cooperate with security agencies by reporting credible information.
