Fact Check: Is Kano APC Candidate, Gawuna the “Breakdancer” in Viral Video?

Claims: After the Judgement of the Kano State Elections Petition Tribunal, a viral video of a man seen in a freestyle dance steps like Michael Jackson was claimed to be that of gubernatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna who was declared winner by the tribunal.

Full Text: Posts on the viral video circulating on social media platforms claimed Dr Nasir Gawuna, the APC flag bearer for 2023 governorship election in Kano, was dancing after the State Election Petition Tribunal declared him the winner.

The video which originated from a social media influencer had this accompanying text “New Kano State Governor Nasir Gawuna of APC Celebrating Victory at Tribunal.”

Verification: In order to validate the accuracy of the claim, PRNigeria explored the various media reports using its fact check tools which led to a report by two media platforms here and here that had already done something about the video.

However, their reports were limited to the accuracy of the video and not the actual identity of the dancer.

Another careful search also led to a Facebook page called Mirror African Diaspora (MAD) which also questioned the authenticity of the video, and termed it inconsistent.

Further findings revealed another X video with the same man as well as similar dance steps as the one in the viral video.

Fact check team also came across a Facebook account with this text “You are trending as Kano APC……”

PRNigeria fact team equally observed that;

The video was made popular by one Chris Osa/Chris Osa Media Group who also produced the soundtrack for the video.

The video surfaced on social media on Wednesday 20 September, 2023, with 71.48k views, 163 likes and 73 reposts.

That the man in the video, like Adeleke of Osun, (the dancing senator/governor) is known widely for his Michael Jackson dance styles.

The man attended  College of Immaculate Conception (CIC), in Enugu, Anambra State.

He is an Igbo man and based in the United State of America (USA).

Man’s identity was uncovered as that of Kanayo Okeke, a CIC old boy and the video was recorded when he hosted his fellow alumni in his US base.

Conclusion: Findings by PRNigeria reveal that the man in the viral video though similarly bearded as Dr Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, is in fact Kanayo Okeke, a C.I.C alumni, from Enugu, Nigeria.

PRNigeria therefore concludes that the claim that the man in the viral video is Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of Kano State is False.
