Embrace Tech Solutions in Solving Insecurity, Minister tells Security Agencies

The military and other security agencies have been advised to leverage the solutions offered by technological innovations toward tackling security challenges.

The call was made today in Abuja by the Minister of Communication, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

Presenting a paper entitled “Cyberspace Information Disorder and its Implications on National Security” during a closing ceremony for the program of the National Security Course on Psychological Operations and Strategic Communication, the Minister noted that some bad elements have continued to harness cyberspace as the perfect avenue for perpetrating crimes.

He said, “The Internet and social media have made it easy to spread misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, which may exert a negative effect on our national security.”

Mr. Tijani noted that the ongoing fourth industrial revolution (IR 4.0) has had significant effects on technological advancements and innovations, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and data analytics.

According to him, the military and other sister agencies can take advantage of these tech tools by incorporating them into their operational plans so as to enhance their security efficiency.

He emphasized that the Ministry will continue to sustain its efforts in helping the security institutions with the required technological tools needed to combat insecurity in Nigeria.

PRNigeria reports that Mr. Tijani has stated that the ministry, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is making relentless efforts towards restraining the spread of fake news and hate speeches across Nigeria’s cyberspace.

“Let me assure you that NITDA is investing a lot of energy and resources in tackling the menace of fake news in this country. Also, the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) is playing its role in safeguarding our data and information.

He also added that, once the National Hate Speech Bill is passed and signed into law, it will provide guidelines and policies on tackling information disorder appropriately.

PRNigeria recalls that on June 13, 2022, the NITDA issued the draft Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms and Internet Intermediaries.

The objectives of the Code include setting out best practices for online platforms and making the digital ecosystem safer for Nigerians and non-Nigerians in Nigeria.
