Expert Urges PR Practitioners to Emphasis Professional Integrity

A renowned author and Public Relations scholar, Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, has urged Public Relations professionals to prioritise self-awareness and authenticity in their careers.

Prof. Ikechukwu said this in his keynote address at the 2024 Inaugural Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) FCT chapter, held in Abuja.

Ikechukwu, a distinguished trainer and media professional, advised Practitioners on navigating the complexities of professional life while staying true to themselves.

In his presentation, titled “Don’t Lose Your Character and Personality in Your Job,” he emphasised the importance of self-awareness and strategic communication.

Prof. Ikechukwu stressed the need for professionals to understand their unique personalities and effectively communicate them in different contexts.

He highlighted the concept of “existential truth,” urging them to identify their core values and beliefs and ensure their professional actions align with them.

“I understand the challenges of maintaining personal character in various professional settings. The strategy of utilising external resources, third party narrative to achieve goals without compromising core values,” he noted.

He also compared PR practitioners to lubricants, essential for ensuring smooth operation within organisations and fostering positive relationships with stakeholders.

He emphasised the importance of ethical and responsible communication practices in achieving this role effectively.

During his remarks, Chairman of the chapter, Stanley Ogadigo, inaugurated two committees: to mobilise members for the upcoming NIPR Week scheduled for April 24 in Ogun State, and a welfare committee.

Mr. Ogadigo urged members to continue offering their support to the chapter, as several programmes are lined up for implementation

On his part, Dr. Ike Neliaku, President and Chairman of the NIPR Governing Council, also briefed the meeting on their visit to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.

Leading the delegation of council members, Dr. Neliaku said that Governor AbdulRazaq had agreed to chair the National Spokespersons’ Summit scheduled for March 25-28, 2024. The Governor also pledged the state government’s support for the Institute’s programmes aimed at rebuilding the nation’s reputation and fostering societal development.

In his capacity as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Neliaku said the governor had promised to mobilise other governors to attend the event.
