Scrapping NAHCON: A Myopic and Retrogressive Call?

Abubakar Jiddah Usman, a seasoned Hajj industry expert, has expressed his disagreement with the calls made by two state governors to scrap or decentralize the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The governors’ demands come on the heels of the challenges faced during this year’s Hajj operation, which they attribute to NAHCON’s incompetence.

Usman argues that the governors’ suggestions are ill-informed and lack understanding of the Hajj industry’s complexities. He highlights NAHCON’s evolution and the constant changes it has undergone, which have contributed to the current challenges. Usman believes that the governors’ criticism of NAHCON is unfounded, and their calls for scrapping or decentralization are myopic and retrogressive.

He questions the governors’ understanding of the Hajj industry, citing their lack of knowledge about the workings of NAHCON and the Saudi government’s experimental policies that contributed to last year’s challenges. Usman also points out the hypocrisy of the governors, who blame NAHCON for the death of pilgrims from their states, despite the fact that the responsibility of screening pilgrims’ health status lies with the state pilgrims welfare boards.

Usman suggests that the governors’ calls are driven by personal interests rather than a genuine desire to improve the Hajj operation. He advocates for a more informed and analytical approach to addressing the challenges facing the Hajj industry, rather than resorting to knee-jerk reactions and scapegoating NAHCON.

In conclusion, Usman’s piece provides a nuanced perspective on the calls to scrap or decentralize NAHCON, highlighting the need for a more informed and thoughtful approach to addressing the complexities of the Hajj industry.
