Fact Check: Did Donald Trump Advise President Tinubu to Return Subsidies, Abolish IMF and World Bank Policies?

A video is widely being shared on the WhatsApp platform during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in Nigeria. The video which was posted by a TikTok user “Abdukano” appeared to show former US President Donald Trump advising Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider or reverse some of his implemented policies for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

The video features him saying: “I Donald J. Trump personally care about the Nigerian situation. People are in destitute poverty. People are suffering from the bad government. I’m advising President Bola Ahmad Tinubu to reapply subsidies on petroleum products, health, and food items tremendously, and abolish IMF and World Bank policies.”

However, the PRNigeria Fact Check team scrutinised the video to verify its authenticity, carefully evaluating its audio and visual components, including pitch, tone, and sync, as well as investigating its source and origin.

An analysis of the pitch and tone revealed a significant mismatch between the voice in the video and Donald Trump’s known voice, with a correlation score of only 20.56%, indicating a high likelihood of the voice being impersonated or fabricated.

Further analysis revealed a lack of synchronisation between the audio and video components, with the spoken words failing to match the movements of the alleged speaker’s lips.

Additionally, a lip-reading assessment showed a 0% correlation, indicating that the speaker’s lips were not forming the words being spoken, casting further wounds on the video’s authenticity.

Moreover, further research into the video’s origin revealed that it was first posted by TikTok user “gistme2” on March 30, 2024, and later shared by Abdukano on April 1, 2024. Notably, a search for credible news sources covering the story yielded no results, suggesting that the video’s content may be fabricated or lacking in legitimacy.

Similarly, there was no evidence of an official statement either on Trump’s social media handles or his campaign team.

Additionally utilizing sophisticated DeepFake detection technology, an analysis revealed a 90% probability that the video is a deepfake, leaving no doubt that the content has been artificially created or tampered with

Conclusion

Therefore, based on the overwhelming evidence presented, the claim that former US President Donald Trump advised Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse subsidies and abolish IMF and World Bank policies has been unequivocally debunked. The findings conclusively establish that this claim is entirely FALSE.
