VON DG Commends TIEMS Nigeria for Upholding Ethical Standards in Emergency Reporting

The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, has lauded the International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS) – Nigeria Chapter for its steadfast commitment to improving the proficiency of humanitarian journalists through ethical and responsible reporting practices.

The VON Chief was represented by his Special Assistant, Mr. Gidado Yushau Shuaib at a Capacity Building Workshop and Training for Journalists organized by TIEMS, which aimed at equipping media professionals with effective techniques to cover disaster and emergency situations in Nigeria.

Praising TIEMS Nigeria’s initiative, Mallam Ndace remarked, “This effort is not just timely but essential in our current climate.” He emphasized the critical role media plays in disaster risk reduction, asserting that through precise, timely, and ethical reporting, journalists have the power to save lives, influence public understanding, and ensure accountability from authorities.

During his address, Ndace highlighted the need for journalists to tell human stories during crises, noting that these narratives serve to inform the public while also promoting advocacy and meaningful action. He underscored the importance of focusing on recovery and solutions rather than sensationalizing adversity.

“In times of disaster, the media must serve as a beacon of hope, providing the public with critical information that can guide their actions and decisions,” he stated. “The stories we tell must emphasize the resilience of our people and the efforts being made to restore normalcy.”

Mallam Ndace also recognized the contributions of distinguished speakers at the workshop, including AVM Mohammed Audu-Bida (Rtd), the Chairman of TIEMS Nigeria; veteran journalist Mr. Sanya Adejokun; Gbenga Morenikeji, who presented on the role of journalism in shaping public perception during emergencies; and Alhaji Yushau Shuaib, CEO of Image Merchants Promotion Limited. He expressed gratitude for their advocacy for ethical journalism and the fight against misinformation, which he deemed vital for maintaining public trust and ensuring effective emergency responses.

“As media professionals, we have a responsibility to report the truth, avoid sensationalism, and respect the dignity and privacy of those affected by disasters. This workshop marks a significant step toward achieving these objectives,” Mallam Ndace noted.

The workshop, which convened journalists, TIEMS officials, and industry experts, featured insightful discussions on crisis communication strategies, combating misinformation, and addressing the ethical dilemmas of reporting on disasters. Ndace expressed confidence that initiatives like this one will not only enhance journalists’ skills but also foster a culture of ethical journalism crucial for national development and disaster risk reduction efforts in Nigeria.
