2024 PRNigeria Fellowship: Another Fascinating Learning Experience

By Sakinat Musa Abubakar,

The PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship 2024 in Abuja stands as one of the most enriching experiences I have ever been a part of. It was a period filled with knowledge, personal growth, and professional networking that will forever shape the careers of everyone involved.

The dynamic lectures and thought-provoking discussions left an indelible mark on us fellows, who came from different walks of life but united under a shared passion for communication excellence.

From the moment the program began, the air was charged with excitement and anticipation. The first week of the fellowship was undoubtedly the engaging session with the President of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Chris Isiguzo. His words felt like fuel to the soul, igniting our ambition and confidence.

It was a perfect example of the power of inspiration when delivered by a seasoned journalist. His interactive style turned the class into a lively debate, challenging us to think critically and confidently express our views.

Following the NUJ President, we had a particularly special moment on Thursday with the former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, who addressed concerns about Artificial Intelligence (AI) potentially displacing millions of jobs, emphasising the importance of skill acquisition in mastering modern tools as a solution. During our interactions, his wisdom and grace left a deep impression on all of us. The opportunity to meet and engage with such a respected figure added a profound layer to the fellowship experience.

At the heart of this initiative was Alhaji Shuaib Yushau, the CEO of Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), publisher of PRNigeria, Economic confidential and other titles, a wonderful soul whose dedication and vision transformed the Fellowship into something truly exceptional.

His beautiful lectures were not only informative but also interactive and inspiring, ensuring that every fellow felt valued and supported. His enlightening session on using AI for public relations opened our minds to new possibilities in the field of Journalism, emphasizing the importance of innovation in communication strategies.

Next, Alhaji Yusuf Alli, a veteran Journalist and editor of the Nation Newspapers, Northern Operations, who took us through investigative journalism, media entrepreneurship, took the baton with a memorable masterclass.

His stories from the field and insights into investigative journalism captivated the room. He brought an authenticity that can only come from a career spent digging for the truth. Listening to him felt like sitting in the midst of greatness.

Then came Zubaida Baba Ibrahim, who held a brilliant session on Solutions Journalism (SOJO). The depth of her class taught us how journalism can be a catalyst for solutions, not just an observer of problems. Additionally, Zainab Bala captivated us with her storytelling class, demonstrating the power of narrative in journalism and helping us harness our unique voices as storytellers.

One of the most memorable moments came with Barrister Chimdi Neliaku’s session, as well as the interactions with the dedicated team behind IMPR, The Managing Editor, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Deputy Editor, Mr Abdulsalam Mahmud, Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, the program coordinator, Mr Zekeri Idakwo Laruba, Mr Kabir Abdulsalam, Mr Salis Manager, and the ever-diligent cameraman, Mr Iliyas Bature, all contributed to the fellowship’s success. Each staff member added layers of support and guidance, ensuring that every fellow felt seen and valued.

As for the fellows, they came in all varieties: from the quiet, observant like Umar Bala and Chimaza, to the lively, expressive participants like Lillian, Habib, and Salim. Among those who stood out for their focus and dedication were Usman, Rahmat, and Fatima Ibrahim, who were always engaged in the learning process.

The fellowship wasn’t just about education, it was also about building relationships. With conferences, facility tours, and even the snacks and lunch breaks, the atmosphere was filled with camaraderie. Fellows shared stories, discussed ideas, and formed bonds that will undoubtedly last beyond the program.

This fellowship was not just a professional milestone, it was a transformative journey that shaped us as individuals and the future of communication.
