Zulum Criticizes Tinubu’s Tax Reform, Warns of Economic Implications

In a bold statement, Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, has firmly rejected the proposed tax reform bill, expressing grave concerns over its potential negative impact on the economic development of the North and other regions in Nigeria.

Governor Zulum called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss rumors suggesting he is unpopular in the North and to reconsider the tax legislation, especially given that 60% of the votes that propelled Tinubu to the presidency came from the northern region.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa, monitored by PRNigeria, Zulum articulated his concerns: “The bill threatens to stall progress not only in the North but also in the South-East, South-South, and parts of the South-West, including Oyo, Ekiti, and Ondo. While proponents claim it benefits the entire nation, we believe its advantages are confined primarily to Lagos State. If it truly does not serve the interests of Lagos, why proceed with it?”

Zulum emphasized the necessity of continuous development for the region, arguing that the proposed tax reforms would be detrimental to the North’s progress. He urged all stakeholders, particularly President Tinubu, to re-evaluate the implications of these reforms.

He stated, “We request the President to disregard those claims that he is not loved in the region. Our concern is not about popularity; it’s about the proposed tax reform.”

The governor also expressed frustration over the swift push to enact the bill and called for a comprehensive review to avert an escalation of poverty, hunger, and insurgency in Northern Nigeria. He assured his ongoing support for President Tinubu while advocating for a more measured approach.

Zulum pointed out, “Conversations with National Assembly members from our region will take place, but we must ask: Why the urgency? The Petroleum Bill lingered in the National Assembly for almost 20 years before it earned approval, yet this bill is being rushed through in just a week. I implore a careful review—this is not just for our sake but for future generations.”

The governor concluded with a plea for unity and progress, stating, “We must prioritize the welfare of the country as a whole. Any legislation or reform that could impede progress in any region should be reevaluated. No law or bill should hinder the advancement of the North.”
