Nigerian Military Won’t Only Be Punishing Officers, Soldiers – CDS Musa

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has stated that the Nigerian military will no longer focus solely on punitive measures for officers and soldiers but will also prioritize recognizing and rewarding exceptional performances.

Gen. Musa made this declaration during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Social and Award Evening held in Abuja on Sunday. The event marked a historic shift in how the military celebrates its personnel, with outstanding Soldiers, Ratings, and Airmen honored for their commitment, gallantry, and resilience.

Speaking at the event, the CDS emphasized the need to commend individuals who risk their lives daily to safeguard the nation. He acknowledged the sacrifices of military personnel, particularly those serving in challenging terrains, and expressed the military’s gratitude.

“I want to tell you we appreciate everything you are doing, all the sacrifices, leaving your families behind, staying in the trenches, and doing so many wonderful things,” Musa said. “Most times, we don’t tell you thank you enough, but this is one way of saying thank you. To whom much is given, much is expected.”

He revealed that the military would adopt a balanced approach by not just punishing erring officers and soldiers but also recognizing those who excel. As part of the new initiative, awardees received certificates of commendation, monetary rewards of N1 million each, and recommendations for promotion when due.

Gen. Musa disclosed that the annual event’s name would be changed from Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. This change aims to honor both fallen heroes and active personnel who continue to serve with dedication.

The CDS commended the bravery and professionalism of the awardees, urging them to remain focused and committed to their duties. “Your exceptional courage and dedication embody the very essence of soldiering. Our great nation is indebted to your service, loyalty, and legacy,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast leadership and unwavering support for the Armed Forces, emphasizing the importance of synergy among military services in tackling the nation’s security challenges.

The award night, which included categories such as the Commendation Award, Defence Research Award, and Defence Valour Medal, was the first of its kind and signaled a new era in the Nigerian military’s recognition of its personnel.
