Abdulkadir Nagode: The Making of the First ‘Dan Amana’ of Ilorin Emirate

Traditional and chieftancy titles are an integral part of the Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. Some royal titles are typically passed down through generations or bestowed by a monarch. Other titles are linked to the royal family or nobility.

Meanwhile, chieftancy titles are often given to well deserving individuals based on their accomplishments, profession, or impactful contribution to the society.

It was therefore not surprising that Dr. Abdulkadir Tunji Nagode, Executive Director, Finance, at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), received a prestigious chieftancy title on Friday, January 25th 2025, when he was Turbaned the “Dan Amana” by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

“Dan Amana” is a traditional title in Hausa, which means “trusted one” or “confidant.” It is only conferred upon individuals who have demonstrated loyalty, trustworthiness, and integrity.

This esteemed title, a unique distinction within the Ilorin Emirate, recognizes individuals of exceptional character, integrity, and unwavering commitment to their community.

Tunji Nagode is a member of the prestigious Third-Estate, a socio-cultural group of professionals and intellectuals from the Ilorin Emirate in Nigeria

With his distinguished career in the energy sector and his significant philanthropic contributions to Ilorin, Nagode embodies these qualities.

His lineage is deeply intertwined with the history of Ilorin. He descends from a prominent family, with his father, Alhaji Saliu Alabi Nagode, a respected technocrat and contemporary of prominent figures like Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule.

His mother, Alhaja Hanatu Belgore-Nagode, is from a distinguished lineage, tracing her ancestry to renowned scholars and royal figures, including Shaykh Muhammad Ahmad Belgore and Emir Shaykh Shuaib Bawa.

This lineage connects Dr. Nagode to the Emirate’s royal family, making him a cousin of the current Emir and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Salihu Modibbo Alfa Belgore.

Dr. Nagode’s commitment to Ilorin extends beyond his lineage. He has consistently demonstrated a strong philanthropic spirit, supporting various community initiatives.

His contributions encompass a wide range, including scholarships for students, the development of essential infrastructure, and the advancement of educational and religious institutions.

He has generously supported organizations such as the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), the Ilorin Central Jumaat Mosque, and the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA).

Notably, his significant contribution facilitated the reconstruction of the Olufadi Maternal Hospital, significantly enhancing healthcare access in the community.

Dr. Nagode’s academic journey is equally impressive. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, a Master’s in Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Business Administration, all from the University of Ilorin.

He has also pursued executive education programs at prestigious institutions like Harvard and Cambridge Universities, further enriching his knowledge and expertise.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Nagode possesses a deep understanding of Islamic teachings.

He has dedicated significant time to studying the Quran under the tutelage of renowned Islamic scholars, including Shaykh Khidir Salaudeen Apaokagi Al-Adaby.

Dr. Nagode’s career path reflects his dedication and expertise. He has held key positions in various organizations, including the NNPC, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the private sector.

The Emir of Ilorin, in announcing the title, emphasized Dr. Nagode’s deep-rooted connection to Ilorin and his father’s significant influence on his life.

This recognition underscores Dr. Nagode’s unwavering commitment to serving his community and upholding the values of integrity and trustworthiness.

The conferment of the “Dan Amana” title marks a significant milestone in Dr. Nagode’s life. It serves as an inspiration to all who strive to make a positive impact within their community.
