Customs Impounds Over 53,000 Litres of Smuggled Fuel in Kwara

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized  over 53,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Kwara State.

NCS said the huge seizures were made by the Operation Whirlwind as part of it’s efforts to curb the rampant smuggling of petroleum products in the state.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, disclosed this at a press conference on Monday in ilorin, kwara state.

He noted that the growing threat that smuggling poses to Nigeria’s economic stability and national security.

“The persistent smuggling of petroleum products undermines our national interests, and the significant price disparity with neighboring countries is a major driver of this illicit trade,” Adeniyi said.

“Nigeria’s cheaper petrol has unfortunately turned it into a prime target for criminal networks.”

PRNigeria reports that between January 14 and February 11, 2025, the Kwara Command intercepted numerous shipments of illicit fuel, including 800 jerry cans and a tanker truck loaded with 33,000 litres of PMS.

These operations led to the Seizure of over 53,000 litres of PMS, with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of NGN 53 million. Notably, a Nissan pickup truck and an Avalon Saloon car were seized during the operations.

“These seizures reflect our continued commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economic interests,” Adeniyi added.

Adeniyi acknowledged the complex nature of smuggling operations, which span across Nigeria’s 17 land borders and six Coastal states “Smuggling activities are constantly evolving.

His words: “To counter this, we have adopted an integrated security approach, combining advanced surveillance, real-time intelligence, and cooperation with communities,” he explained. This multi-pronged strategy has enabled the NCS to disrupt illicit fuel movements across key border regions.”

The CG commended the dedication of Kwara Command officers and nationwide operatives.

“I salute the courage and professionalism of our officers who work tirelessly under difficult conditions. They are on the front lines in the battle against these economic saboteurs,” he said.

He also called on border communities and legitimate operators to aid the NCS by providing credible intelligence. “This fight is a national one. We need everyone’s support to succeed,” he added.
