IPRA’s UN Bureau Engages in Key United Nations Meetings

The International Public Relations Association (IPRA) has a productive February, actively participating in a series of high-level meetings across the United Nations system.

Leveraging its accreditation with both the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), IPRA representatives engaged in discussions on critical global issues.

The Spokespersons Digest, a publication of PRNigeria reports that on February 5, IPRA representatives James McQueeny, Matthew Cossel, and Annabel Prunty attended the 2025 ECOSOC Partnership Forum. Later in the month, Cossel participated in the sixth plenary session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD63) and the DGC Civil Society briefing with the President of the General Assembly on February 12. McQueeny and Prunty also attended the CSocD63 side event, “Strengthening Local Journalism, Rebuilding Social Inclusion, and Participatory Governance,” emphasizing IPRA’s commitment to media freedom and effective journalism policies.

During the CSocD63 side event, organized by the Center for Media and Peace Initiatives (CMPI), McQueeny and Prunty contributed to discussions on the role of media policy and the challenges of implementation. Their participation reaffirmed IPRA’s advocacy for strong media frameworks and press freedom worldwide, urging governments to protect and empower journalists.

The ECOSOC Partnership Forum, held at UN Headquarters in New York, focused on advancing sustainable, science-based solutions aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Discussions centered on five key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set for review at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF): Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). IPRA highlighted its dedication to SDG 8, particularly advocating for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in public relations and communications.

At the Sixth Plenary Session of CSocD63, discussions revolved around policies to enhance social resilience in the face of escalating global crises. With participation from private sector leaders and academics, the session underscored the importance of ethical communications in social development. As a key advisory body within ECOSOC, CSocD plays a vital role in shaping social policies that align with the UN’s development objectives, including poverty eradication, social inclusion, and access to decent work opportunities.

Additionally, IPRA attended the DGC’s annual briefing with the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, which focused on integrating civil society into the General Assembly’s priorities. Discussions primarily centered on the Pact of the Future, ratified in September, and its implementation under the theme of unity and diversity. IPRA reiterated its commitment to supporting the General Assembly’s efforts in realizing this crucial framework.

Through its active engagement in these UN events, IPRA continues to uphold its mission of promoting ethical communication, media freedom, and sustainable development worldwide.
