Enugu Police Debunk Reports of Fulani Herdsmen Attacks

The Enugu State Police Command has firmly dismissed recent media reports alleging that Fulani herdsmen launched deadly attacks on several villages in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, allegedly killing no fewer than 25 residents.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the police described the reports as “entirely false, sensational, and mischievous,” insisting that no such incidents occurred in the state.

“The so-called report is filled with fabricated names and incidents that do not correspond to any reality within the state,” Ndukwe stated. “It is clearly a calculated attempt to misinform the public and undermine the efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace and security in Enugu.”

Some media outlets had claimed that agrarian communities in Uzo-Uwani were under siege from armed herdsmen, leaving many dead and forcing survivors to flee to neighboring Anambra and Kogi States for safety. However, the police dismissed these claims as baseless.

Ndukwe criticized the use of vague expressions like “at least” in the reports, calling it a hallmark of speculative journalism lacking in factual accuracy.

He also quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, who condemned the circulation of “inaccurate, mischievous, and unfounded reports aimed at misleading the public and inciting unnecessary fear.”

Reaffirming the Command’s dedication to ensuring the safety of all residents, Ndukwe urged the public to disregard the fake reports and continue to support the state’s security efforts.

“The public is assured that the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, remain resolute in their commitment to preserving peace and combating crime across Enugu State,” he added.
