Shun State Enemies, Embrace Patriotism – CDS Urges Corps Members 

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to uphold peace and patriotism, warning them against becoming instruments in the hands of enemies of the Nigerian state.

General Musa, represented by Commander Godwin Egbunu, delivered the message during a security awareness campaign for Corps members in the South-West, held at the NYSC orientation camp in Ogun State. The event was part of the military’s non-kinetic strategy aimed at fostering civil-military relations across the country.

According to a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, the CDS emphasized the critical role of youth in national security, urging Corps members to contribute positively to national unity and development.

While the armed forces continue kinetic operations to address security challenges, Musa said winning the hearts and minds of the populace through sensitization and engagement is equally important.

He cautioned Corps members on the responsible use of social media, advising them not to promote misinformation or spread fake news. He also encouraged them to stay away from drug abuse and to serve as role models in their host communities.

In his presentation, Major Ayo Omojokun stressed the importance of security awareness, urging Corps members to respect local cultures and remain vigilant.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility. Know your environment, identify local police stations, community leaders, and keep emergency contacts handy,” he said. He further advised against sharing live locations on social media and encouraged Corps members to keep family and trusted individuals informed about their movements.

The Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, commended the initiative and reiterated the importance of security awareness among Corps members.

“It’s in their own interest to stay away from unauthorized engagements. We constantly emphasize the proper use of social media, but hearing it directly from security officials adds more weight. It’s a laudable initiative that should be sustained,” she noted.

On the issue of abductions involving Corps members, Nasamu said the NYSC has made emergency contact lines readily available to all participants upon arrival at orientation camps.

“We ensure Corps members have access to key security contacts, including the Police, DSS, and even my personal number,” she added.
