HURIWA Founder, Emmanuel Onwubiko, Mourns Loss of Eldest Sister
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has announced the passing of Mrs. Patricia Okereke (née Onwubiko), the eldest sister of its founder and National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko. She died in the early hours of May 1, 2025, in Abuja following a brief illness.
In a heartfelt tribute, Onwubiko described his sister as an “angel” and a pillar of strength within the family. He praised her as charitable, deeply religious, and profoundly God-fearing, noting her selfless devotion to family, community, and faith.

“My sister was named after the iconic Saint Patricia and aspired to become a Catholic nun before choosing the path of marriage and motherhood,” he said. “She was a wise counselor, a constant source of strength and inspiration, and someone who always reminded me of the fleeting nature of life and the need to serve God and humanity.”
According to the family, Mrs. Okereke, a mother of six and grandmother to many, was dedicated to the education and wellbeing of her children, ensuring they graduated from prestigious universities and excelled in their careers. She was also a notable figure in her Christian community, known for her humility, kindness, and peacemaking qualities.
The Onwubiko family and HURIWA have expressed profound grief over her loss, describing her as an irreplaceable presence whose legacy of faith and compassion will continue to inspire those she left behind.
