Abia Gov Urges Army to Prioritize Intelligence Gathering

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called on the Nigerian Army to strengthen its focus on intelligence gathering as a strategic tool to prevent security threats across the country.

Speaking on Friday while receiving a delegation from Course 47 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, led by the institution’s Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Rear Admiral Ufieko Uko, Governor Otti emphasized the critical role of intelligence in combating crime.

“A lot of times, if you pay attention to intelligence, you can prevent the majority of criminal activities before they happen,” Otti said. “Security begins with intelligence. Properly gathered and processed intelligence keeps the forces alert and ready.”

The governor also commended the presence of international students at the college, noting that their enrollment signified confidence in Nigeria’s military training institutions. He highlighted the cooperation between security agencies and the Abia State Government, which he credited for significant progress in reducing crime across the state.

He congratulated the course participants and expressed appreciation to the leadership of the college for selecting Abia as a study location. Otti also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies to maintain peace in the state.

Earlier in his remarks, Rear Admiral Uko said the visit to Abia was part of the Army’s Environmental Study Tour under the theme, “Harnessing Grassroots Intelligence for Enhanced Internal Security.”

He explained that the tour would help students translate classroom learning into practical experience by analyzing local intelligence-gathering mechanisms that could aid both the government and security agencies.

“If there are any successful practices here, we’ll adopt them and implement them wherever our officers are deployed,” Uko stated.

He also thanked the governor for the warm reception and logistical support provided for the delegation.
