Fact-Finding Mission: Governor Yusuf Probes Prison Abuse Claims

In a show of empathy and commitment to justice, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has paid an unscheduled compassionate visit to two major custodial centres in the state—Janguza Maximum Security and Goron Dutse Medium Security Correctional Facilities.

The visit followed recent media reports alleging inadequate feeding and incidents of sexual abuse within the correctional centres. The governor’s visit was seen as a strong response underscoring his administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the humane treatment of all citizens, including incarcerated individuals.

During the visit, Governor Yusuf made significant donations to improve the welfare of inmates. These included two cows, assorted foodstuffs, toiletries, as well as essential beds and bedding materials. In a further demonstration of compassion, he also paid compensation amounting to nearly ₦5 million for eight female inmates, facilitating their release.

The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, expressed deep appreciation for the governor’s proactive intervention and pledged to ensure the equitable distribution and judicious use of the donated items.

“The Command assures the public that these items will be utilized effectively to enhance the daily living conditions of the inmates,” the statement read.

Reacting to the concerns raised in the media, the Correctional Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of abuse or human rights violations within its facilities. It affirmed that necessary measures are consistently taken to uphold the safety, dignity, and well-being of all inmates in line with national regulations and international standards.

The Command further acknowledged the continued support of the Kano State Government and reaffirmed its commitment to correctional best practices, rehabilitation, and the protection of the rights of all individuals in custody.
