Army Probes Alleged Assault on Food Vendor by Soldier in Benue
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that it is investigating an alleged assault involving one of its personnel, Private Christopher Emmanuel, and a female food vendor identified as Doshima, in Kula, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on May 6, 2025, but was brought to the attention of authorities on May 8, is said to have stemmed from a dispute over an unpaid debt. According to preliminary reports, the altercation allegedly escalated after the soldier claimed the woman insulted him during a phone conversation.
In a statement signed by Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Abdullahi Lawal Osabo of the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Makurdi, the Nigerian Army noted that Private Christopher Emmanuel has been taken into custody pending the outcome of a thorough investigation.

“The Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for human rights abuses and will take disciplinary action based on the findings of the investigation,” the statement read.
The military also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline and protecting the rights of all citizens. It assured both the victim and the general public that justice would be served in line with the Army’s high professional standards.
The statement further urged members of the public to report any misconduct by army personnel to the Nigerian Army’s Human Rights Desk helpline rather than immediately resorting to social media. It emphasized that all allegations of abuse are treated with seriousness and will be addressed accordingly.
The leadership of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) condemned any form of indiscipline or abuse by its troops and expressed appreciation for public cooperation in addressing such matters.
