Akwa Ibom Marine Police Foil Sea Pirate Attack, Recover Boat and Stolen Items

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Marine Police successfully repelled a sea pirate attack along the Oron-Calabar waterways on Saturday, May 10, 2025, recovering a speedboat and various stolen items from the assailants.

The incident occurred around 12:06 p.m. while the Marine Police were conducting search and rescue operations in the area. Acting on a distress call about an ongoing attack by approximately seven pirates in a speedboat, the Officer-in-Charge swiftly mobilized his team to respond.

According to a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the pirates, on sighting the approaching police patrol boats, opened fire sporadically. The Marine Police operatives returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee into a shallow creek inaccessible to police boats.

One W23 speedboat fitted with a 200HP Yamaha engine gearbox

One 15HP Yamaha engine

Various dismantled engine parts

One Dane gun

One improvised toolbox

One Emage petrol generator

One OX standing fan

A rubber container suspected to contain charms

One white candle

One black wallet with a WAEC ID card bearing the name ‘Patrick Edet Effiong’

Two recent passport photographs

One brown handbag with assorted tablets

Two rounds of K2 live ammunition and two empty shells

Personal items including a wristwatch, marker, perfume, black thread with needle, and body cream

DSP Timfon John noted that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of waterways and warned criminal elements to desist from acts of piracy and other maritime crimes.
