379,997 Candidates to Resit UTME as JAMB Admits Error
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged responsibility for the widespread technical failures and irregularities that marred the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), prompting a resit for nearly 380,000 candidates.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, became visibly emotional during a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, struggling to hold back tears as he addressed the media.

Oloyede confirmed that 379,997 candidates affected by various technical glitches and scoring anomalies will have the opportunity to retake the examination. The decision comes after numerous complaints from candidates and parents regarding low scores and irregularities across several centres.
He disclosed that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres within the Owerri Zone, which covers the five states of the South East, were particularly affected and have been scheduled for a resit.
“I take full responsibility for what happened,” Oloyede said, intermittently wiping his face with a handkerchief. He attributed the failure to negligence on the part of some JAMB staff and assured that corrective measures are being implemented.
The announcement has sparked reactions nationwide, as stakeholders in the education sector call for accountability and reforms in the conduct of future UTME exercises.
