Media Literacy: UNESCO, MAIN Train Journalists, Content Creators in Kano

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in partnership with the Media Awareness and Information for All Network (MAIN), has held a two-day training workshop focused on integrating Media and Information Literacy (MIL) into editorial policies and content creation.

Held in Kano, the workshop brought together media executives, senior journalists, and social media content creators from across the North-West region. The event, themed “Integrating Media and Information Literacy into Editorial Policies of Media Organisations and Social Media Content Creators”, was declared open by the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Waiya.

Addressing participants, Alhaji Waiya stressed the importance of MIL in today’s media landscape, particularly given the proliferation of online platforms. He noted that with the rise of untrained individuals producing content via smartphones and internet access, the need for responsible journalism and information dissemination has become increasingly urgent.

“The issue of media and information literacy must be taken seriously,” said the Commissioner. “This workshop is timely, as it equips professionals to counter the growing tide of misinformation and disinformation.”

Also speaking at the opening, Mr Albert Mendy, Acting Head of the UNESCO Office in Abuja, emphasised the critical role of media leadership in fostering ethical and inclusive journalism. Represented by Ms Yachat Nuhu of UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector, Mr Mendy urged participants to use the training to share knowledge and develop sustainable approaches to embedding MIL into newsroom culture.

“By doing so, we affirm the media’s enduring role as a public good and a cornerstone of freedom of expression,” he said, while also thanking the Kano State Government for its consistent support of UNESCO initiatives and MAIN for its collaborative efforts.

Alhaji Jamilu Yahaya Jega, Zonal Director of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), reiterated the commission’s commitment to responsible broadcasting. Represented by NBC Kano Director Alhaji Adamu Salisu, he highlighted MIL as a necessary tool for raising journalistic standards and reinforcing public trust.

“The integration of MIL principles is not just theoretical; it is a practical necessity for a credible and ethical media environment,” said Alhaji Jega.

MAIN Chairman, Professor Jide Jimoh, welcomed participants and underscored the threat posed by misinformation to democratic values and professional journalism. He called on attendees to use the opportunity to deepen their understanding of MIL and its relevance to ethical media practices.

The workshop was attended by 30 senior managers from 25 media organisations, including radio, television, print, and digital platforms across the seven states of North-Western Nigeria.
