FACT-CHECK: Is DSS Receiving Applications for Recruitment?

Claim: A viral post on X (formerly Twitter), which has garnered over 33,000 views, 160 retweets, and numerous shares, claims that the Department of State Services (DSS) is currently recruiting. According to the message, the DSS is accepting applications for artisans including electricians, plumbers, mechanics, and carpenters. The post outlines various eligibility criteria such as age range, educational qualifications, and a submission deadline.

The widely circulated message reads:

“DSS is receiving applications for Electricians, Plumbers, Mechanics and Carpenters. The requirements are: 1. Primary Cert, 2. Secondary Cert, 3. Aged 25 – 35, 4. Indigene letter, 5. Height – 1.6m, 6. Trade Test Certificate from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, 7. Written Application to be submitted to DSS State Command, 8. Deadline for submission of Application is on or before 10th June, 2025. NOTE: Avoid Certificate forgery, in order not to block someone’s chance, please!”

The post has sparked widespread interest and reactions across social media platforms and online forums.

Background:
The Department of State Services (DSS) is Nigeria’s principal domestic intelligence and security agency. It is responsible for intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism, and the protection of senior government officials, including the President.

To investigate the authenticity of the recruitment claim, PRNigeria’s fact-check team conducted a digital forensic search, tracing the origin of the viral message, which began circulating online on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

The team examined the official DSS website and its verified social media handles for any recruitment announcements. There was no evidence supporting the recruitment claim. Instead, the DSS issued a disclaimer via its official social media platform, stating:

“The public is advised to ignore any misleading or false information about the Service’s recruitment process. Disregard such claims, please.”

The agency reaffirmed that there is no ongoing recruitment and warned the public against falling victim to misinformation or potential scams.

Conclusion:
The claim that the DSS is currently recruiting artisans is False. There is no official recruitment exercise underway by the Department of State Services at this time.

Verdict:
FALSE – The DSS is not conducting any recruitment exercise as claimed in the viral post.
