Smooth Transition: NIPR Makes History with Successful Electronic Council Elections
By Abaji Fatima Agnes

In a landmark move towards digital transformation and democratic inclusivity, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has successfully conducted its first-ever electronic Council elections. The historic exercise, held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Ceedapeg Hotel Auditorium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, marked a significant shift in the Institute’s electoral process—ushering in a new Council for the 2025–2027 term.

The electronic voting, conducted over a secure digital platform, allowed certified NIPR members to cast their votes remotely and in real-time. The process, hailed for its transparency and efficiency, drew commendations from members, stakeholders, and observers across the country.

For the first time, eligible voters participated from the comfort of their locations, breaking the logistical barriers of physical voting. The innovation came as part of reforms initiated in late 2024 to address low voter turnout and enhance member participation in the governance of the Institute.

“I was able to vote seamlessly from my hotel room in Uyo without being physically present in the auditorium,” said Mrs. Rhoda Dandaura, a seasoned PR professional. Another voter, Mr. Osondu Ohaeri, a Fellow of the Institute, praised the Electoral Committee’s transparency and commitment. “It is a step worthy of emulation. This has eased the stress of physical voting,” he remarked.

A total of 738 certified members were accredited, with 518 successfully casting their votes. Voting began at 1:00 p.m., closed at 4:00 p.m., and results were collated and announced just 30 minutes later—a remarkable feat in Nigeria’s professional association history.

Despite minor connectivity challenges due to poor internet access in some areas, the Institute swiftly responded by providing alternative internet support to ensure seamless participation.

The e-voting platform, designed with user-friendly features, was overseen by an independent IT firm and audited to ensure transparency and security. Electoral Committee Chairperson, Prof. Uche Mbanaso, a renowned cybersecurity expert, noted: “This is a new dawn for the NIPR. We’ve demonstrated that professional bodies in Nigeria can embrace technology without compromising integrity.”

Immediately following the announcement of the new Council members, the electoral conclave reconvened to elect the leadership of the Governing Council. In line with the Institute’s electoral college system, Dr. Ike Neliaku and Prof. Emmanuel Dandaura were re-elected as President/Chairman and Vice President/Vice Chairman of the Governing Council respectively—by unanimous voice vote.

Former NIPR President, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, described the exercise as “seamless, credible, and historic,” expressing optimism that the new Council would consolidate on the achievements of the previous administration.

Public relations professionals and analysts nationwide have lauded the NIPR’s successful deployment of e-voting as a model for other professional bodies in Nigeria. Many consider it a bold leap toward deeper engagement, transparency, and institutional reform.

As the newly elected Council assumes office, expectations are high. With a broader mandate and widespread member endorsement, the Council is tasked with steering the profession towards greater relevance, inclusivity, and ethical excellence.

The 2025 NIPR elections are not just a leadership transition—they are a triumph of innovation, a redefinition of participatory governance, and a reaffirmation of the Institute’s commitment to modern, transparent, and member-driven leadership.
