Police Arrest 27 Suspects Over Murder of DPO in Kano

Tension gripped Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent mob attack on the Rano Police Division that led to the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and widespread destruction of property.

According to a press statement issued by the Kano State Police Command and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the violence was sparked by the death of a detained suspect, Abdullahi Musa, who was arrested for reckless motorcycle riding and suspected to be under the influence of substances.

The statement noted that Musa, a local motorcycle mechanic, was taken into custody on May 25, 2025, around 8:15 pm after several public complaints. However, while in detention, he reportedly exhibited signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died the following morning, May 26, 2025, around 6:00 am.

In reaction to the incident, an enraged group of individuals mobilized and launched a coordinated attack on the Rano Police Division. The mob looted and set parts of the station ablaze, destroyed ten vehicles, and torched two others. The DPO was seriously injured in the attack and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, PhD, who visited the scene and also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19), has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

As part of the response to the crisis, 27 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the violent attack, and normalcy has since been restored to the area.

The Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and refrain from acts of violence or taking the law into their own hands. “The Command commiserates with the family of the deceased DPO who paid the supreme price in active service, and assures the public of its commitment to maintain peace and public order across the state,” the statement read.

The police also appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators as they work to ensure justice is served.
