Why Saudi Authorities Barred Me from 2025 Hajj Exercise – Sheikh Gumi

The decision by Saudi Arabian authorities to bar prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage has sparked reactions, with the cleric himself offering insight into what led to the development.

Sheikh Gumi, a Kaduna-based preacher known for his outspoken views on global and regional politics, disclosed via his official Facebook page that despite being granted a valid visa, Saudi officials were reportedly “uncomfortable” with his presence in the Holy Land.

In his words, “For some obvious reasons—my views about world politics—the Saudi authorities are uncomfortable about my presence in the Hajj after giving me the Hajj visa.” This statement suggests that the scholar believes his frequent commentary and dissenting positions on geopolitical matters, particularly those involving Muslim nations, may have led to his deportation.

While not providing specific examples of the statements that may have triggered Saudi discomfort, Gumi has in the past made critical remarks regarding both Middle Eastern and Western policies, particularly concerning Islamic governance and justice.

Despite the setback, the cleric expressed gratitude to Nigerian authorities for showing concern and reportedly pledging to engage their Saudi counterparts over the matter. “Thanks to the Nigerian authorities, who have pledged to take up the matter immediately with the Saudi authorities,” he wrote.

Quoting Qur’an 2:196 to express religious acceptance of the situation, Sheikh Gumi maintained a calm disposition: “Allah said… ‘And accomplish the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah, but if you are prevented, [slaughter] the offering available with you.’”

Having returned to Nigeria, the scholar noted he would now focus on his health and farming activities while urging prayers for peace in Nigeria and the safe return of other pilgrims.

The development adds to the growing trend of clerics and commentators whose political or religious positions put them at odds with Saudi Arabia’s increasingly scrutinized religious and diplomatic posture.

Though Saudi officials have yet to issue a formal statement on Gumi’s deportation, the incident highlights the sensitivity of the Kingdom toward critical voices during its tightly managed annual pilgrimage season.
