Elder Statesman, Professor Jibril Aminu, Passes Away at 85
Professor Jibril Aminu, a distinguished Nigerian scholar, statesman, and diplomat, has died at the age of 85.
His passing was confirmed to journalists on Wednesday by a family source and the Adamawa State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Abdullahi Prambe.
A towering figure in Nigeria’s public life, Prof. Aminu celebrated his 85th birthday on August 25, 2024. Born in 1939 in Song, Adamawa State, he was a man of many accomplishments whose career spanned medicine, education, politics, and diplomacy.

He was a Consultant Cardiologist and an influential educational administrator, who served the nation in several high-ranking capacities. These included Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, and Senator representing Adamawa Central.
In his tribute, Hon. Prambe expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Prof. Aminu as a mentor and a beacon of wisdom and service.
“His contributions to education, healthcare, and national governance will forever be remembered,” he said.
According to the family source, the funeral prayer has since been held at the Abuja National Mosque today, after Zuhr prayer at 2 p.m.
