Iran Must Never Possess Nuclear Weapons – G7 Declare

The Group of Seven (G7) has unequivocally reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, emphasizing its position in a joint statement issued from The Hague.

The declaration was made by the Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—alongside the High Representative of the European Union.

“We reaffirm that the Islamic Republic of Iran can never have nuclear weapons and urge Iran to refrain from reconstituting its unjustified enrichment activities,” the statement read.

The G7 called for the urgent resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a “comprehensive, verifiable, and durable agreement” addressing Iran’s nuclear programme. To that end, the group urged Iran to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as required under its safeguards obligations.

The group also demanded that Iran grant IAEA inspectors full access and provide verifiable information regarding all nuclear materials within its territory.

In a strong rebuke, the G7 condemned threats made in Iran against IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, including calls for his arrest and execution.

The statement further addressed regional stability, reiterating support for the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“We urge all parties to refrain from actions that could further destabilise the region. We also commend Qatar for its pivotal role in facilitating the ceasefire and express our solidarity with both Qatar and Iraq following recent Iranian-led strikes on their territories,” the group stated.

Emphasising the importance of nuclear non-proliferation, the G7 highlighted the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as the foundation of global nuclear governance and called on Iran to uphold its commitments under the treaty.

Reaffirming their broader commitment to regional peace, the G7 reiterated support for Israel’s right to self-defence and its national security.
