Defence Ministry Introduces Green Curriculum in Military Schools
The Ministry of Defence has announced the integration of environmental sustainability into the curriculum of all Armed Forces Primary and Secondary Schools across the country.
This strategic policy was officially unveiled by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, during the flag-off ceremony of the National Green School Program.
Ambassador Aduda, represented by Mr. Marcus Kura, Director of Education at the Ministry, highlighted the initiative at the Nigeria Navy Secondary School in Kuje, Abuja.
According to the Ministry’s press release, Ambassador Aduda emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to cultivating environmental awareness among students through hands-on and project-based learning approaches. “This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s climate objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals,” Aduda stated, adding, “Our Armed Forces schools must serve as models of sustainability, equipping young minds with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect and preserve our environment.”

To ensure the program’s effectiveness, Ambassador Aduda also announced the establishment of a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework. This framework will be used to assess the program’s progress and impact, measure outcomes, ensure accountability, and provide data for continuous improvement.
The initiative is a collaborative effort with the National Green School Program, which aims to mainstream environmental education into school systems nationwide. “Through this partnership, students will engage in practical eco-friendly activities, including tree planting, recycling projects, clean-up campaigns, and sustainability-focused school clubs,” Mr. Kura explained.
Earlier in the ceremony, CDR. J.O. Ibiang, Commandant of the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, remarked that the National Green School Program is more than just a ceremonial event; it’s a “call to action designed to instill environmental consciousness and sustainability in students.” He expressed gratitude to the Permanent Secretary for his unwavering support.
The flag-off event was well-attended, with notable guests including the Chief of Defence Staff (represented by COMD Adetunji, Director of Education at Defence Headquarters), senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, military education officers, and representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Education, along with school administrators, teachers, and students.
Key highlights of the event included practical tree planting exercises, an exhibition showcasing student-led recycling innovations, and a collective pledge from participating schools to uphold green values.
