Beyond the Clinic: Dr. Fatimah Binta Reveals PR’s Impact on Medicine

Dr. Fatimah Ahmadu Binta, a medical professional vying for the Vice Chairman seat of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Lagos chapter, has highlighted the critical role of effective public relations in healthcare. She asserts that PR is instrumental for healthcare providers to maintain a positive image, cultivate strong relationships, and ultimately elevate patient care and outcomes.

Dr. Binta shared these insights during an engaging virtual media chat with PRNigeria Interns, where she emphasized the inherent connection between her two fields of expertise. “I found Public Relations in Medicine, and that says a lot because the Medical profession requires both communication and management skills,” she explained. Despite the perceived challenge of juggling two distinct disciplines, Dr. Binta, who has a decade of experience providing both medical and PR services across various governmental, non-governmental, and private institutions, believes that with the right mindset, it is achievable.

Dr. Binta’s journey into public relations was inspired by a colleague during her medical studies. Her early exposure to PR principles, dating back to secondary school, has shaped her into the formidable professional she is today. Her commitment to the NIPR’s vision and mission, particularly within the Lagos chapter, has been unwavering.

As part of her campaign for Vice Chairmanship, Dr. Binta is championing an era of inclusion and teamwork within the organization. Her passion for collaboration extends to advocating for increased participation of women in Nigerian public relations.

Addressing concerns about digital technology in media, Dr. Binta acknowledged the growing prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), even within the NIPR. She firmly believes that navigating AI in media must be guided by the core ethics of journalism.

Her manifestos reflect her forward-thinking approach: “To support and promote the strict adherence to ethical standards through awareness, dialogue, effective enforcement and protecting the credibility of our profession by discouraging quackery and unprofessional conduct.” She also aims to align with the drive for digitalization by working with elected Excos “to introduce online resource centers, webinars, and a dynamic database to ease access to information and opportunities.”

The interactive session also featured a Q&A forum, allowing Dr. Binta to elaborate on her aims and objectives for the Vice Chairman role. Respected colleagues, including Dr. Muyiwa Akintunde and Dr. Raymond Asuquo, offered their commendations, underscoring her standing in the professional community.

Dr. Binta’s dedication to both public relations and medicine has earned her numerous accolades. Her awards include: Alimosho Amazon Leadership Woman of the Year (2017), Mountain Top Ministerial School Leadership and Excellence Award (2018), Corporate Social Responsibility in Healthcare Delivery (ALIMOSHO LGA) Excellence (2018), LASG LASCOFED Award (2019), Media & Service Awards for Best Volunteer Service (Darling International, Oyo state) (2021), Excellence in delivery of community & alternative medicine Award (Main Mega Ltd Ibadan) (2023), and the MMS Accelerated Amazon 2025 award and induction into the ‘Famers’ Hall of Fame (April 30, 2025).

The media chat concluded with a vote of thanks from the PR Nigeria interns, who extended their best wishes to Dr. Binta in her future endeavors. Dr. Binta stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication and ambition increasingly demonstrated by women in their chosen fields.
