COAS Commissions Signature Projects in South-south, Reassures Troops’ Welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has commissioned a series of new and remodeled projects across formations under the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, pledging that troop welfare remains his administration’s top priority.

During a three-day operational visit to Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, General Oluyede commissioned barracks infrastructure and engaged with commanders, soldiers, and state leaders within the Division’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).

At the Port Harcourt Barracks in Rivers State, the Army Chief inaugurated the Headquarters 6 Division Office Complex Extension, the Python Harmony Centre, as well as new and remodeled accommodation for soldiers. He also unveiled a Petroleum Oil Lubricant Point and other facilities executed by the 6 Division Garrison under Brigadier General S. Ahmed.

In Bayelsa State, General Oluyede commissioned the 16 Brigade Annex Complex in Yenagoa, an electrification project supported by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and accommodation facilities built by subordinate commanders. He also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for 20 units of two-bedroom flats for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers at Elele Barracks, and inspected the fully renovated Medical Reception Station at Wellington Barracks.

The visit also took the Army Chief to Akwa Ibom State, where he inaugurated the remodeled Medical Reception Station at Ibagwa Barracks and paid a courtesy call on Governor Umo Eno at Government House, Uyo. Oluyede lauded the state government’s collaboration with the Army, noting that the support had contributed to Akwa Ibom being one of the most peaceful states in the country.

Responding, Governor Eno praised the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining security and fostering civil-military relations in the state, promising sustained partnership.

Addressing soldiers at 29 Battalion Parade Ground in Port Harcourt and 6 Battalion in Abak, Akwa Ibom, the COAS commended troops for their resilience in anti-oil theft and pipeline protection operations in the Niger Delta. He assured them that their welfare remains central to his “soldier-first” command philosophy.

The Nigerian Army, in a statement issued by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the COAS’ visit was part of his operational tour and leadership engagement with troops under 6 Division.
