Tinubu Jets to Brazil After Japan Summit, Eyes Trade, Security Deals

President Bola Tinubu has departed Yokohama, Japan, for Brasília, Brazil, in the second leg of his two-nation diplomatic tour, with trade, security, and cultural exchange topping his agenda.

The President left Japan on Thursday night after a five-day visit where he attended the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) and held a string of bilateral meetings with Japanese leaders, investors, and development partners. His next stop is Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, where he will begin a state visit on Sunday, August 24.

According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will make a brief stopover in Los Angeles before arriving in Brasília. His engagements in Brazil will include talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other senior officials on cooperation in agriculture, energy transition, and regional security.

“The President is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations in trade, security, and cultural exchange, as well as deepening opportunities for investment and collaboration,” Onanuga said.

Tinubu’s stop in Japan earlier this week saw him pitch Nigeria’s reform agenda to Japanese businesses while calling for investment in infrastructure, technology, and renewable energy. He also held an interactive session with Nigerians in the diaspora, urging them to remain good ambassadors while investing in their home country.

On his way to Japan, the President made a stop in Dubai before arriving in Yokohama on August 18.

The visit to Brazil marks the first official state trip by a Nigerian leader to the South American nation in nearly a decade. Diplomats say Tinubu’s engagements could reset ties between Abuja and Brasília at a time when both countries are seeking stronger partnerships in trade, energy, and South-South cooperation.

The President is also scheduled to meet with the Nigerian community in Brazil, where he will brief them on government policies and encourage greater diaspora participation in national development.

Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after completing his engagements in Brazil.
