Police Chief Tasks Border Patrol Commanders on Enhanced Security
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged Border Patrol Commanders across the country to strengthen security operations at Nigeria’s frontiers in order to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and identity.
Egbetokun gave the charge on Friday during a conference with Border Patrol Commanders at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He noted that as the country’s first line of defence against external security threats, the officers bear a critical responsibility of preventing bloodshed and protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
Highlighting the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s borders, including its long maritime corridors that connect to the Gulf of Guinea, the IGP commended the Border Patrol Unit for its consistent efforts in tackling crimes along the nation’s borders.

“The Nigeria Police Force cannot tackle 21st-century crimes with 20th-century tools. That is why we must embrace technology – surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, and real-time data analysis,” he said, urging commanders to anticipate, innovate, and outsmart criminal elements.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of intelligence-led policing, community trust, and collaboration with sister security agencies as essential strategies for effective border management. He also assured that the welfare of officers would remain a priority under his leadership, acknowledging the sacrifices made by personnel in the line of duty.
The IGP further tasked the commanders not to relent in their efforts to prevent and preempt criminal activities at Nigeria’s borders, while assuring citizens of the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to securing the nation and protecting its people.
