The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called for dialogue and consultation as the most effective pillars of regional peace, stressing that sustainable security can only be achieved through constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
The Minister delivered the keynote lecture at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 12th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which brought together defence chiefs, policymakers, diplomats, and academics from more than 100 countries under the theme “Upholding International Order and Promoting Peaceful Development.”
“Dialogue succeeds where confrontation fails. It is the foundation on which lasting security is built,” Badaru declared, urging global partners to embrace inclusive processes as shared responsibilities in upholding international order.

Citing Nigeria’s record in peacebuilding, the Minister highlighted the country’s leadership role in ECOWAS interventions in Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia, its contribution to the Multinational Joint Task Force against Boko Haram, as well as domestic initiatives such as the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme and Operation Safe Corridor for deradicalisation.
He emphasised that even the most complex crises can be resolved when dialogue is paired with inclusion, legitimacy, and sustained engagement. Badaru further linked his message to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that Nigeria’s strategic autonomy and proactive diplomacy remain central to advancing regional and global peace.
The Defence Minister calls for stronger collaboration among nations, stressing that multilateral cooperation and domestic reform are mutually reinforcing in the pursuit of security, stability, and development.
