Over 100 Jerrycans of Petrol Seized as Police Foil Smuggling to Niger Republic

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Border Patrol Unit have intercepted more than 100 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, in separate anti-smuggling operations along the Illela–Sokoto Highway and in Katsina State.

In the first operation, officers on stop-and-search duty along the Illela–Sokoto Highway intercepted a vehicle laden with 80 jerrycans of petrol. The driver, identified as Yasir Adamu, was arrested after preliminary investigations revealed he was attempting to smuggle the fuel across the border into Niger Republic.

In a similar incident in Katsina, operatives recovered 35 jerrycans of petrol, each containing 25 litres, from suspected smugglers who abandoned the products and fled upon sighting the police team. The exhibits were seized while efforts are ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s determination to curb economic sabotage and sustain robust operations against cross-border crimes.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Saturday, said the police would continue to work tirelessly with relevant agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s economic resources and bring offenders to justice.
