Tinubu Confers National Honour on Outgoing INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the expiration of his second term in office.
Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of the commission, served two consecutive terms totaling ten years. His reappointment in 2020 came after the successful completion of his initial five-year tenure.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended Professor Yakubu for his service to the nation and his role in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process through the conduct of credible elections during his time in office.
“In recognition of his dedicated service to the nation, President Tinubu has conferred on Professor Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON),” the statement read.
The President also directed the outgoing INEC chairman to hand over the affairs of the commission to the most senior national commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will act in that capacity pending the appointment of a substantive successor.
In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as INEC chairman since 2015, pledging continued support for the advancement of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
