Security sources disclosed that the high-level meeting, which commenced in the afternoon, was convened to assess the implications of President Trump’s comments accusing the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from Islamist militant attacks.
In his remarks late Saturday, Trump reportedly alleged that the U.S. military was being mobilized “to act in Nigeria to tackle Islamist militancy,” a statement that has caused anxiety within diplomatic and security circles in Abuja.
According to sources, the NSA’s intervention aims to harmonize Nigeria’s security response and evaluate intelligence reports on the potential consequences of the U.S. president’s pronouncement.
The outcome of the deliberations is expected to be officially communicated through the Office of the National Security Adviser in due course.
