Akwa Ibom Police Declare 2025 ‘Stable,’ Unveil 2026 Security Roadmap Amidst 563 Arrests

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has concluded its 2025 security review, declaring the state “generally peaceful and stable” while unveiling a seven-point operational strategy for 2026.

Speaking at an end-of-year press conference on Monday, December 22, 2025, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, attributed the year’s stability to intelligence-led policing and the dismantling of several criminal hideouts across the state.

The Command reported significant tactical successes in its crackdown on violent crimes, including kidnapping and human trafficking. According to official data released by the Command:

* Criminal Prosecution: 563 suspects were arrested and charged to court for various offenses, resulting in 33 convictions.

* Arms Recovery: A total of 179 assorted firearms, 323 rounds of ammunition, and 100 live cartridges were recovered and displayed to the press.

* Humanitarian Rescues: Police operatives rescued 74 victims of human trafficking and 10 kidnapped persons during the year.

* Asset Recovery: 14 stolen vehicles were recovered and returned to their rightful owners.

Crackdown on Fake News and ‘Jungle Justice’

CP Azare expressed grave concern over the rise of misinformation on social media, revealing that several arrests have been made in connection with the fabrication of false news designed to cause public panic.

The Commissioner also reiterated a “zero-tolerance” stance against jungle justice and unlawful gatherings, confirming that the restriction of masquerade activities to approved locations has successfully reduced communal violence.

Looking ahead, the Command outlined its 2026 priorities, which emphasize a shift toward modern policing tools and digital security:

* Cybercrime & Fake News: Strengthening units to combat digital threats and misinformation.

* Community Trust: Deepening engagements with traditional rulers, youth, and women groups.

* Human Rights & Professionalism: Enhancing officer discipline and respect for civil liberties.

* Modernization: Utilizing advanced policing tools and improved deployment strategies.

The statement, signed by DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, concluded with an assurance of intensified patrols for the festive season.
