FACT-CHECK: Was President Tinubu Bestowed With a Highest Christian Title in Saint Lucia?
Claim: A viral video circulating across WhatsApp, Facebook, X and YouTube claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was bestowed with the highest Christian religious title by the leadership of Saint Lucia.
Background: The video is overlaid with the Christian hymn “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”, repeatedly playing the line “no turning back,” while captions suggest the development carries religious implications, particularly referencing Nigeria’s current “Muslim-Muslim ticket” political debate.
The edited clip features footage from an official ceremony in Saint Lucia, with a media-style overlay and the phrase “Tinubu’s Knight to remember,” creating the impression of a faith-based investiture. Many social media users interpreted the honour as a religious conversion or a Christian title conferred on president Tinubu.
The claim emerged following President Tinubu’s July 2025 state visit to Saint Lucia as part of a diplomatic tour of Caribbean and South American countries.
Verification: To verify the claim, PRNigeria’s fact-check team carried out a step-by-step digital verification.
First, the viral video was segmented into keyframes using the InVID-WeVerify verification plugin. Reverse image searches were conducted across multiple search engines to trace the origin of the footage. Results showed that the visuals were extracted from official coverage of Tinubu’s July 1, 2025 investiture ceremony in Saint Lucia and had been digitally repurposed with added background music and captions to create a new narrative.
On July 1, 2025, Saint Lucia conferred its highest national honour, the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), on the Nigerian leader during a ceremony held at the Government House, Morne Fortune. The investiture was performed by the Governor-General of Saint Lucia, Errol Charles, in recognition of Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen historical and cultural ties between Africa and the Caribbean, particularly with member states of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The ceremony was covered by Nigeria’s Official broadcaster, NTA.

Further checks confirmed that the original ceremony footage was publicly documented by Nigeria’s State House and reported by credible media outlets. An official statement published on the State House website titled “Saint Lucia Bestows Highest National Honour on President Tinubu” clearly describes the honour as a national knighthood award, not a religious title. The statement explained that the recognition was for strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations and fostering cooperation in trade, education, climate resilience, healthcare and cultural exchange.
PRNigeria fact-check team also examined the structure and nature of the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL). The KCOSL is Saint Lucia’s highest national honour, part of the country’s honours system, and is not a church-based or Christian ecclesiastical title. It is a state award conferred by the Governor-General on behalf of the government of Saint Lucia. While the word “Knight” may carry historical Christian connotations in medieval Europe, in modern Commonwealth honours systems it denotes a ceremonial state recognition rather than a religious office or clerical rank.
Technical review of the viral clip revealed clear signs of contextual manipulation. The added Christian hymn was not present in the original ceremony broadcast. Audio layering analysis showed the hymn was digitally superimposed over the official footage to create a religious tone. The music overlay appears deliberately selected to frame the investiture as a spiritual declaration rather than a diplomatic event.
The team found no official record, Church documentation, or statement from Saint Lucia’s government indicating that Tinubu was conferred with a Christian religious title. Coverage from reputable international outlets and the Saint Lucian government consistently described the event strictly as a national honour.
The narrative linking the award to Nigeria’s current “Muslim-Muslim ticket” political controversy appears to be an interpretative spin introduced by social media users rather than evidence-based reporting. There is no indication that the honour required religious affiliation, conversion, or theological endorsement.
Chronologically, the evidence shows that an official state knighthood ceremony held in July 2025 was later edited, re-captioned and repackaged with Christian music to suggest a religious undertone not present in the original event.
Conclusion: After thorough verification, the PRNigeria fact-check team concluded that President Tinubu was not bestowed with a Christian religious title by Saint Lucia. He received a state national honour, Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), which is a diplomatic and ceremonial recognition, not a church or faith-based title.
Verdict: MISLEADING.
