NAHCON Rejects Substandard Meals Served to Nigerian Pilgrims in Saudi Arabia
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reaffirmed its commitment to pilgrims’ welfare and food safety after rejecting some meals served to Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia over alleged violations of health and packaging regulations.
In a statement issued by the commission, NAHCON said Saudi Arabian health authorities had continued to enforce strict food safety standards during the ongoing Hajj operations, especially in view of the prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom.
According to the commission, some dinner meals served to Nigerian pilgrims on Tuesday night, May 27, 2026, failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards and were immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi officials.
NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the commission acted swiftly to protect pilgrims from possible health risks associated with improperly handled meals.

To cushion the impact of the development on affected pilgrims, the service support company reportedly provided alternative light refreshments, while members of the NAHCON board moved round to brief state officials and managers on the situation.
Demonstrating what officials described as a firm stance on pilgrims’ welfare, Ambassador Yusuf directed the commission’s security committee to investigate the caterers involved as well as individuals linked to the affected contracts.
The chairman also ordered a separate investigation into some tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than officially registered and allegedly exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims during the Hajj exercise.
NAHCON warned that any operator found culpable after the investigations would face sanctions, including the withdrawal of operating licences.
The commission further disclosed that arrangements had commenced for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the meal incident.
NAHCON appreciated the understanding and cooperation of the pilgrims, assuring them of its continued commitment to their welfare, safety and comfort throughout the Hajj exercise.
“NAHCON appreciates the understanding of the pilgrims and reassures all of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise,” the statement added.
